Now that we're in apple-picking season, I'll be making apple pies. The most time-consuming part of the preparation is slicing the apples.
Well, I've found a way to speed up the process.
This year, I've started using my egg slicer to slice the apples. I peel and quarter the apples by hand as I've always done, but then I take the quarters and run them through the egg slicer. I might have to cut the quarters of a particularly large apple in half to get them to fit the slicer, but the slices that come out work perfectly for pie.
Alas, the slices are too big for apple cake, which requires thin slices that almost melt away in the baking process.
But for apple pie, my new best friend in the kitchen is my egg slicer.
