Resurrection

27 JULY 2015

It has been almost five years since my grandfather passed away. After his death, I transplanted some resurrection lilies (Lycoris squamigera) from his yard to mine before the house was sold. I don't remember the lilies being there when I was a kid, but I think they were planted when I was in college. In any case, by the time I moved back to Columbus in 1998, they were well established.

Resurrection lilies create new bulbs and form clumps, and I suspect the bulbs were given to my grandparents by someone who had them in his or her own garden. They do best in full sun, which is in very short supply in my yard. Consequently, the bulbs I planted have not flourished.

Several of them produced leaves for a couple of years, but I never had a flower. After a couple of harsh winters, only one plant seems to have survived, sending forth leaves in the spring which die away in the early summer.

But lo and behold, as you can see in this photo, that plant has finally bloomed. And its appearance resurrects memories I have of my grandfather and his garden.
