Food on Friday: Will it finally live up to its name?

5 JUNE 2014

For several years, I have planted Burpee's Fourth of July tomato, which is a strong, reliable producer of small tomatoes that keep well. (Well, there was the one year I planted Independence Day by mistake thinking it was the same variety as Fourth of July — which it isn't.)

As the name implies, the fruit on Fourth of July is supposed to start being able to be harvested around the 4th of July. I start my plants indoor from seed, but I'm not generally very good about getting the plants into the garden in early May, when I should. Rather, it's often late May or early June when I finally get the plants in the ground.

So I don't generally begin to harvest Fourth of July tomatoes until late July or early August.

This year, however, I was able to get the plants in in a timely manner, and already in early June I have fruit that has set. So it may be possible that, for the first time, Fourth of July will live up to its name and I'll be enjoying the taste of homegrown tomatoes in a month's time.
