Food on Friday: Kitchen garden

Seed catalogues are arriving daily in the mail, and while I'm planning my outdoor garden for the spring, I already have a garden of sorts in my very kitchen.

As you can see in this photo, I have some chicory (also known as radicchio, in the white planter in front) and some parsley growing in my kitchen. These plants are actually refugees from last year's outdoor garden that I've been keeping indoors for several months now.

Rabbits kept eating through the other parsley plants outside, and another critter decided to munch on the chicory. So I saved what I could in pots and put the plants on a table on the porch for the rest of the summer and into the early fall. (And no, the critter does not bother plants indoors.)

With cold weather, I initially put the parsley and chicory with other houseplants in the basement under grow lights, but I moved them recently to the kitchen so that I would have easy access to the greens for the occasional meal. I'll keep using them as long as they keep producing, and if they make it to the spring, I'll put them back out on the porch.
