I was a graduate student at the University of Chicago on this date back in 1988, and the temperatures were quite chilly that day. The morning low was -11F (-24C) at Midway Airport. The following day (6 January 1988), the morning low at O'Hare was -14F (-26C).
I remember treating this as a big adventure, even though the cold was noticeably seeping through the poorly-sealed windows of my university-owned apartment. I went out and took a photograph of the sign outside the Hyde Park Bank displaying the temperature (which showed something below zero; of course, I could never find the photograph now).
Well, similar temperatures are forecast for central Ohio for Monday into Tuesday. We already endured a temperature of 1F (-17C) early Friday, and while temperatures have bounced back into the 30sF, this is merely an interlude.
Having missed attending this year's AIA-APA meeting because of the weather, I'm not in the best of moods to begin with, and 26 years on (with their concomitant aches and pains), another blast of -11F or -14F or whatever the final temperature reading falls to early Tuesday morning is no longer viewed by yours truly as something fun.
