Food on Friday: The serendipity of mint iced tea

12 AUGUST 2016

Gardens, like life, are often disorganized and overrun with what had been left behind by others. And, as in life, sometimes we find joy in our gardens' unintended remnants.

Such is the case here with mint, which has taken over a patch of earth near the garage.

I have dried some of the mint in years past, but I never come close to using much of it. Instead, I pick some as the mood strikes me to use as garnishes or in iced tea.

In cold-brewing the tea, I stick several sprigs of mint in the pitcher with the water and the tea bags. The mint lightly flavors the tea, making the beverage even more refreshing on a hot summer day.

I would never go out of my way to buy fresh mint just to flavor iced tea, but as it's already here, I enjoy the serendipity of using it.
