Consumers of kosher wine are well aware that the additional supervision involved in its production — along with the production rules themselves — can significantly increase its cost. It is typical nowadays to have to spend at least $20 a bottle for a decent kosher wine.
So I was curious when I was in Trader Joe's the other day to find several kosher wines for sale for $5.99 a bottle. The wines, under the label Terrenal, are produced in Spain, are not mevushal, and have a hechsher from the London Beth Din.
I decided to try the Tempranillo, whose bottle has a 2014 date.
The verdict?
Well, it wasn't anything magical, but it was a pleasant enough, full-bodied red that could be served at an informal meal and used in recipes. Would I serve it to important guests on a more formal occasion? No, but at $6 a bottle, I'd definitely buy it again.
