A fragmentary message

17 May 2015

Last night, I saw I had a message on my cellphone. When I called to retrieve it, the connection was poor and all I could make out was a garbled woman's voice saying "Love you."

I didn't recognize the out-of-town telephone number, but I was a bit concerned about what the message might have been. I immediately checked the message again, and the clear connection revealed a quite different message indeed: a recorded voice whose first words were, "To lower your interest rates, press 1 now."

What I heard must have been only a garbled "LOWER YOUR," which in my mind got turned into "LOVE YOU."

So the message wasn't a desperate cry for help or an enticing come-on, but rather a robocall. I was relieved, because the first possibility represented someone in trouble, and the second could have gotten me into trouble.
